Building the perfect job description starts with understanding the core responsibilities and outlining the position. However, the way you really drive the best applicants is by crafting the best job description to tell a balanced story of what the company expects from the applicant as much as you share what the company can expect to give in return for great employment.

To help get you off in the right direction though, there are many job description templates to be used as a base sample on how to structure a sounds job description. These templates are free to use and may be used to post jobs through VIVAHR or any of the free job posting sites we recommend.
Job Description Template Sample
Job Title [Be sure to use specific job titles. Job boards do not like the fun flavorful creative job titles]
Reports To: The job title will report to [positions title or titles this position reports to].
Job Overview: Take the time to write a high-level overview of what the position responsibilities look like. You can also address what a good candidate experience would look like.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Health benefits are not the only thing to address. If you have a cell phone, gym or travel reimbursement plan setup, be sure to showcase that here. Talk about employee wellness, office amenities and areas to show you care about the people side of the business.
How much detail you share in your job description about the compensation is entirely up to you. However, good job descriptions tend to leave little to the imagination. You do not want to waste your time with applicants who are expecting double than your high range. You set yourself up for failure. We have seen many companies explain an estimated on-target earnings range this year and what to expect three years out. Show your vision to hire for long-term view.
A job description is a document outlining the core job responsibilities for a given role you intend to hire someone to perform. This document can be used for performance evaluations and alignment to measure accountability.
Many job boards will require you to upload or post a job with a full job description. These job descriptions are used to match with relevancy what job seekers are searching for. If your job description uses industry terms or phrases similar to what job seekers are inputting during their search, you’ll have a higher probability of ranking highly.
A job specification could be considered a more precise job description that details the exact educational degrees, experience, skills, and requirements for a role. In most cases, these terms are used interchangeably and nearly always describe the same document. Other countries have different names for this. You may see some job boards as you use your JD or JV.
