IT Analyst Job Overview:

An IT Analyst, also called a systems analyst, designs and implements technology systems that ensure efficiency within organizations.  When there is a need, a manager will give an overall picture of what is needed, and consult an IT analyst.  The analyst will use different tools and skills to design a plan that satisfies the objective for managers and end users.  After the plan has been implemented, the analyst will oversee programmers, coders, and equipment vendors to ensure proper working order.  An IT Analyst will also fix any bugs or problems with the system.

In a nutshell, the analyst merges business and information technology initiatives.  That being the case, it’s helpful to have knowledge of both.  Having a solid understanding of what the business needs, and how to get there will assist in designing the right plan of action.  Being able to communicate with managers to fully understand the needs is essential to doing the job right.

Job Summary:

We are looking for a knowledgeable and skilled IT systems analyst who can consult and create a plan to enhance the efficiency of our organization.  The duties will include connecting business knowledge with IT knowledge, making them work together, and doing this as cost effective and efficiently as possible.  Also expected will be to solve technology problems when they arise, debugging any systems that need it.

The top qualities we’re looking for are: an excellent understanding of technology and business, attention to detail, great communication skills, critical thinking skills, and the ability to focus and complete a task within a given time.

IT Analyst Responsibilities include:

  • Understanding business and technology needs
  • Maximizing system compatibility to help the sharing of information
  • Designing, analyzing and implementing efficient IT systems
  • Understanding computer speed and memory and calculating these to enhance systems
  • Debugging issues that may arise, and fix any errors in the systems
  • Communicate with stakeholders to understand their requirements
  • Develop and analyze functional specifications
  • Coordinate developers to build and implement technology solutions
  • Integrate multiple systems and reconcile needs to different teams
  • Gather feedback from end users about system performance
  • Plan and oversee projects (e.g. upgrades, hardware/software installations)
  • Provide advice and technical training
  • Keep abreast of technology trends and developments

IT Analyst Requirements:

  • Experience as an IT Analyst, IT Consultant or similar role for (x) amount of years
  • Experience in project management
  • Great understanding of HTML and programming languages
  • Sound skills in Microsoft suite
  • Sound understanding of business practices
  • Knowledge of system securities and databases
  • Experience troubleshooting with IT systems
  • Ability to communicate well with colleagues
  • BSc/BA in Computer Sciences or Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • Ability to think analytically and problem solve

Understanding traits and personalities of many IT Analysts can help you attract the right kind of talent for this position.  This job requires a person who is well rounded in business knowledge and technology.  The candidate must have an overall understanding of the two worlds merging together to create success.  As the person hiring, you need to be clear about goals and the big picture of what the organization needs.  Ask the candidate how they would approach this project.  What trends have they recently seen in the IT space relating to business?  Are they able to explain complicated technology to someone outside of that understanding?  Give them an example to explain in layman’s terms and see how they do.
